A Dilema of Mine

by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on January 7, 2009

As you may (or may not) know Apple released a new 17″ MacBook Pro which is what I own. I could return this one which is the full aluminum body. The computer works perfectly fine however the new one has better battery life and is a little faster however it has the emo black bezel and black keys that the 15″ models have. I’m desperately looking for some reccomendations as to what I should do with my laptop. I have until January 9th to return it with a possible restocking fee.

My thoughts with the restocking fee are that if it’s >$100 I can buy another battery for this computer and acheive the same battery life and not need to wait until the new models are in stock at my local store. The batteries are hot swappable so I would lose nothing more than maybe 30 seconds of time to swap batteries.

Someone please give me a hand with this decision.

Review: smcFanControl

by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on December 21, 2008

I was having issues with burning my legs with my MacBook Pro when it’s plugged in. So a quick google search found me smcFanControl that from my experience so far helps significantly took the temperature from a scorching 95 degress to a more comfortable 85 degrees. The software allows configurable profiles based on charging, simply being plugged, or running off battery. I’m currently running my fans very fast for charging since I’m often attempting to use my comptuer as it’s charging. Overall I’d say snag it if you’re running an Intel mac.

Get it here

Edit: I’ve got to just express my amazement for this program, normally my computer would be cooking right now as it sits here charging but running the fans at nearly double of the normal speed really and truly helps. The case temperature is a mere 76 degrees with the fans running at 4880 RPMs.
