Internet at IBM
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on February 6, 2009
Today I was at IBM in Southbury, CT and had a though… I wonder how fast this internet is. So over to speedtest.net I headed. It turned out that the downstream speed when connecting to a server in NJ was just about 80mbps! The upstream was even sitting around 30mbps for a while. It was amazing.
And if you’re wondering why I was there, it was because I had a meeting for CTIA. You’ll also find a descritpion as to what CTIA is below since I’m doubting many people know what it is.
The Connecticut Innovation Academy (CTIA) develops academic skills, communication skills, creative thinking, and problem solving through the completion of a comprehensive IT Research and Development (R&D) project. Students act as members of a design team and utilize a variety of communication technologies and multimedia software to research, design, develop, and present a viable solution to a comprehensive challenge. Students form a mock technology company and assume roles in the company to complete activities needed to develop a solution. Patent research and intellectual property management are integral components of the R&D project. This comprehensive instructional strategy mirrors IT industry R&D and IT project engineering work that results in multiple solutions and the development of valuable high-tech engineering and business management skills.
A Side Project of Mine
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on January 21, 2009
Well I’ve begun working on a side project at work to test a theory that if the url contains the search keyword you’re going to rank better. However I’m looking for a couple of things, the first and primary being constructive criticism and the second if you can think of anything else you’d like to see please let me know. Please check out our/my new site House Plans Connection. And please let me know what you think in the comments here.

This is a pretty cool video explaining the advent of the internet and networking as a whole. Take a look, it’s worth it… I promise.

Why (mt) is Awesome
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on December 15, 2008
Well I’ve always been a fan of Media Temple (mt) since I began hosting with them back in the summer and here’s a reason why like them so much more compared to the hosting company that my company’s site is on.
Whenever I have an outage at work they never do anything to notify me (except once recently). Media Temple on the other hand has been having issues (I’ve noticed) with my cluster (#3) and my storage unit (#5) good luck on my part *rolls eyes*. Regardless (mt) sends out an email to let me know that my site is going down for maintinence for a period. Not only will they be on time it will be done and greatly improve my site’s reliability, I hope, since it’s been terrible the last two days.
Best of all Media Temple keeps a blog going where you can track all the big incidents, in case you’re curious it’s located here.
As a side note, my site may be unvailable during this period of planned maintinence late tonight.
Hosting on Windows Sucks
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on December 2, 2008
Well I was at work today attempting to upgrade to Wordpress 2.7 beta 3 without the nice automatic upgrade and I ended up failing to get it to work because well frankly, Windows hosting sucks. I finally got it to work after a while though, it took some playing around with some Plesk, IIS, AND Windows Explorer. I’ve got to say that hosting Wordpress on an Apache platform is a much easier since all it takes is setting the permissions to 777 for the necessary folders. I really hate windows hosting, not only is it slow it’s tough to launch anything.
Rant of the Week: Facebook Status
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on November 24, 2008
Well I’m sure everyone that uses Facebook knows what I’m talking about when I yell about the status updates, in case you don’t it’s a short little blurb to let people know what you’re doing or what’s on your mind. Example below:
Now for a few examples of terrible updates:
As you can probably tell I blurred out the names to protect the “innocent.” Now the first one I don’t quite even get to tell you tell you the truth but it could have been preceded with “[name] is thinking…”. The second is nicely put and props to her. The third could have been phrases something like “[name] is wondering…”
As you can see it doesn’t take a whole lot of thought, either people are just flat out lazy or just flat out stupid. Here’s a quick snapshot of my status updates page. Some people were smart enough to figure out how to write in third person. The others… well use your imagination as to what I’d say.

75% Less Spam?!
by Jamison "JAK" Kissh on November 12, 2008
According to the Washington Post’s Security Fix they managed to track what could quite possibly be 75% of the world’s spam to McColo Corp out of San Jose, Calif. At this point they notified the two major ISPs of McColo, Global Crossing and Hurricane Electric both of which seem to have turned off connections. Hurricane Electric did so an hour after receiving the report. So hopefully this means a reduction in spam!
